Gattaca screencaps, Jude Law, Uma Thurman, Ethan Hawke
Gattaca is a beautiful film–I can definitely get more than a day’s worth of screencaps out of this one. With young Jude Law, Ethan Hawke, and Uma Thurman looking coolly beautiful in every frame, it’s nearly impossible to make a choice on which ones to capture. I’ve done my best.
Gattaca is a cautionary film about a future where children are genetically engineered–parents choose the traits they want and select the best embryos for the most perfect child they can have. At birth, babies are rated with a statistical analysis on what skills they will possess, what illnesses they have a propensity for, and what they will most likely die of. These analyses determine their future job placement and standing in society. Anyone born naturally, without genetic tinkering, is considered an In-Valid, unworthy for anything but the lowliest of jobs.
The story centers around Vincent (Ethan Hawke), who goes to great lengths to assume the identity of another man so that he can pursue a lifelong dream of being in the space program. Jerome (Jude Law), whose identity Vincent borrows, has been perfectly engineered to be the best–except for the fact that an accident that broke his back has left him paralyzed and in a wheelchair. In return for providing Vincent with the genetic material he needs to fool his employers, Jerome gets room and board and “the lifestyle to which he’s grown accustomed”.
Gattaca is a suspense film that is chilling, poignant, and often heart-wrenching. The three actors are wonderful, and I can remember being blown away by Jude Law’s performance the first time I’d seen this film. Every pain, every feeling, is lurking under his cool mask–with just tiny shifts of expression he gives us volumes. Years later, it’s still one of his finest performances.
Jude and the always wonderful Tony Shalhoub as the man that makes the whole subterfuge possible.
