Welcome to the Shrine to Actors

Here we have the last installment of “The Naked Time” screencaps from Star Trek: The Original Series. We’ve got Vulcan tears, a basketweave hairdo, and Kirk’s famous ripped shirt. What more could you want?

We’ll start with Spock (Leonard Nimoy) checking in with the already crazy-virus-infected Nurse Christine Chapel (Majel Barrett). Since the virus seems to bring out a person’s inner desires, Nurse Chapel tries a little romance with her favorite Vulcan.

The touch sends the virus from Christine to Spock…

He doesn’t resist at first, in somewhat of a trance, but he finally slips away…

…where he has an uncharacteristic breakdown in the hall.

Kirk (William Shatner) hits Spock one too many times and gets a bloody lip for his trouble…and then starts suffering from the virus himself…

But once on the deck, Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) injects him with the antitode–of course, ripping his shirt in the process. Kirk ended up shirtless in probably 85% of the episodes…or perhaps that’s just my memory exaggerating the facts. His shirt did seem to get torn quite often, though.

Spock and Scotty (James Doohan) get the engines up and running again…

While McCoy, Spock, and Yeoman Rand (Grace Lee Whitney) try to keep things together on the bridge. Notice Rand’s trademark basketweave 60s hairdo. Perhaps she was the inspiration for SNLs Coneheads.

Still suffering after-effects of the virus, Kirk remembers the pain of loneliness from being ship’s Captain–and unable to fraternize with any of the crew. This is a long-standing theme in Kirk’s life, even throughout the movies; they never really allow him to be happy.

Rand can feel his stares, but doesn’t know what he’s thinking. We also get a nice shot of the basketweave again.

The bridge crew of the Enterprise, on to their next mission. Whitney said in an interview that she and George Takei were supposed to get a Star Trek series of their own; however the eventual new Star Trek became Enterprise with Scott Bakula. It’s a true shame. I would have loved to see a Takei and Whitney Star Trek project–or a “George and Gracie” show as Whitney called it.

As promised, tonight we have more Star Trek original series screencaps from the episode “The Naked Time”. We’ve got Kirk, Spock, the lovely Uhura, and of course, more shirtless Sulu. Turns out George Takei had a pretty rockin’ bod’ back in the day. He’s actually still in good fighting form, which you may have noticed in his stint on Heroes as Kaito Nakamura, Hiro’s father. Like many of the original Trek crew, I think Takei’s acting has improved from those early days as well. Apart from his excellent work on Heroes, Takei has been keeping busy with a lot of TV and videogame voice work, as well as small roles/cameos in films. Up next for George Takei is an insane comedy film called The Pool Boys, starring Matthew Lillard and hitting theaters in August 2009. Following that with a September 2009 release is the martial arts film The Red Canvas.

So let’s see the buff, shirtless George Takei as a wild and crazy virus-infected Sulu in “The Naked Time”…

Kirk tries brute force, but in the end, it’s Spock’s patented Vulcan nerve pinch that gets him.

Shirtless Sulu, down for the count, felled by the Vulcan nerve pinch.
